This was a really interesting read. It was well conceptualized and there are moments where the prose really shines. It's got all the things that make fantasy interesting, like zombies and fallen angles and vampires and voodoo and magic and tricksters galore! For me, the story was a bit hard to follow because every chapter is preceded by a vignette that I think is supposed to work like a wikipedia of gods, but by the end of the book I still couldn't figure out how those sections related to the chapters. That took me out of the story every chapter and made things hard to follow. Also areas where the dialogue is a bit klunky, like lots of swearing is added to show our characters are being salty, which is really unnecessary.

3.5 stars for me. I'd absolutely recommend giving this one a read if you're into New Orleans and magicky trickster things.… (plus d'informations)

Having finally gotten around to reading this novel, two thoughts come to mind. One, I regret not reading it sooner, as this is really excellent story, as one follows the destiny of Renaissance Raines, the young woman who was "fridged" in the author's first novel, only to be resurrected as a guide to the dead, and who now finds herself stuck with the problem of a person who has dodged their own destiny with death. Two, I hope that there's more from Camp in the future, as I found it very emotionally satisfying. About the only thing that I can mark this book down for is that there is a little too much misdirection, but without all the misdirection the story just wouldn't work.… (plus d'informations)

Vom ersten Band noch absolut begeistert, war die Vorfreude auf ein weiteres Abenteuer in New Orleans riesig. Und ich glaube, dem konnte dieses Buch einfach nicht so ganz standhalten. Es war zwar wirklich nicht schlecht, die Story hat mir gerade am Anfang und zwischendurch immer wieder sehr gut gefallen, die Idee finde ich immer noch klasse und auch hier gab es etwas, mit dem ich absolut nicht gerechnet hätte. Auch hier ist die Wortwahl, die Beschreibung von allem wieder ganz wunderbar gelungen. Aber ab einem gewissen Punkt hatte ich das Gefühl, dass es sich unendlich zieht, und das hat das Lesen stellenweise ziemlich anstrengend werden lassen. Ich hatte gar nicht mehr richtig diesen Schwung und die Motivation weiterlesen zu wollen, habe wenn, dann ein paar Kapitel geschafft und doch wieder pausiert, weil es wieder anfing "lang" zu werden. Irgendwann fängt man da zwangsläufig das Überfliegen an. Und das find ich unheimlich schade. Gerade auch weil ich vom ersten Teil so begeistert war.

Hier vermute ich ganz stark, dass das, was dem Buch fehlt eine Prise Jude Dubuisson ist. Man begegnet ihm zwar auch hier, aber Protagonistin ist in Band zwei nun mal Renai und sie ist einfach völlig anders als Jude. Was übrigens ganz nebenbei erwähnt nicht dramatisch ist, weil Renai trotzdem eine tolle Figur ist. Ich mag sie sehr. Nur ist die Story irgendwann einfach zäh und der Humor aus Band eins fehlt dadurch etwas. Renai bringt Stimmungsmäßig eher etwas Schwere rein.

Gerade 'Teil zwei' in diesem Buch hätte ich irgendwie gar nicht gebraucht, obwohl mit diesem eine super interessante Wendung kommt und auch da spannende und nicht gerade unwichtige Dinge passieren. Aber insgesamt konnte es mir dann schlussendlich doch nicht ganz so viel geben wie erhofft, oder wie zu Beginn des Buches erwartet. Der starke Anfang konnte nicht gehalten werden und wurde durch das langsamere Tempo und der gedehnten Handlung etwas geschmälert. Vielleicht ist auch das schon der Punkt: Das Buch ein wenig kürzer - mindestens 100 Seiten - die Handlung nicht so extrem auseinandergezogen, kompakter. Das hätte da bestimmt unheimlich viel ausmachen können.
Ich bin auf jeden Fall froh, dass Band eins gut abgeschlossen ist, sodass man ruhigen Gewissens zu diesem Greifen kann, was ich hiermit auf jeden Fall allen empfehlen will, die das Buch noch nicht kennen. Bei Band zwei sollte man einfach mal reinlesen, denn nur weil es sich für mich langatmig anfühlte, muss es ja nicht für jeden so sein. Definitiv schwächer als Band eins.… (plus d'informations)

This book captures everything that makes our city special, adds a dash of mystery and a heaping of magic and myth, mixes in in the biggest gumbo pot ya mama got and tops it off with Tony's.
