The story was ok overall. I see many people complimenting it on historical accuracy, and while a lot of events seemed right, the social interactions seemed really improbable to me. A chambermaid serving at table and handing out drinks, the servants attending a ball ( held on Easter, no less, which the author acknowledges is a liberty, but I don't think acknowledges just what an amazingly unlikely occurrence this would be.)The magistarte teaching the chambermaid ( who already know how to read ) law. All a bit much to swallow, although perhaps this period was just far . far different from later periods, I admit I don't really know.

I really enjoyed the first four books in this series, so I'm very sad that this book and its predecessor didn't capture my interest in the same manner. Maybe it was too much of the "who will Lucy choose?" being drawn out for so long... I can't quite put my finger on it.

The love triangle is really starting to wear thin, and Lucy spent a good portion of this book talking to herself (especially when she was decoding ciphers...) I also figured out the mystery fairly early on, which took away some of my enjoyment too.

Very good historical mystery that takes place right after the Great Fire of London. Really liked the characters, especially Lucy Campion.
