Not to be missed, My Awesome Place chronicles life in 90s New York City: jobs, roommates, relationships, writing, plenty of substance abuse. It's a coming of age story with bite and edge, raw yet polished. Fraught relationships with a family who don't know how to accept a queer family member are present, and the complexities of defining what one's "sexuality" is are explored. Feminism is probed, queer culture is investigated. The afterword by Burke's partner details, though Burke's blog entries, the problems in the medical establishment. An excellent portrait of a time and place, distilled to its finest essence, this one is highly recommended.½
