- London born, Archibald C. Budd (1889–1960) was able to emigrate to Canada at the age of 21, thanks to a £250 prize he won in a limerick contest.
After homesteading in Saskatchewan, and without formal training, he joined the Dominion Experimental Station at Swift Current. Being an astute observer, his work in weed identification and weed seed physiology brought him wide recognition as a leading authority on prairie flora. As Range Botanist (1944–1957), he prepared line drawings and plant keys that culminated in a pioneer government publication of inestimable value to prairie farmers: Wild Plants of the Canadian Prairies (1957).
