Darrel Bristow-Bovey is the funniest writer in South Africa: I don't say that lightly - David Bullard, Trapido, Sarah Britten, Barry Ronge [in his heyday] and several others could claim the laurels but - after due consideration, I have decided the prize must go to Darrel.
The Naked Bachelor is not his best or funniest book - But I Digress, a collection of his columns, is the laugh of choice - however it gives wonderful examples of his quirkly wit and ridiculous humour.
Unfortunately, it is also the book that outed him as a 'plagiarist': actually, the quotes are unnecessary - there can be little doubt that he did borrow from Bill Bryson without due acknowledgement.
However, moving on and ignoring the elephant in the room, it is an excellent book, self-depricating and funny, a wonderful introduction to the attractive universe Darrel created and which is, marguinally, familiar to all middle class English-speaking South Africans.
After his fall from grace, this book was going for a song at book shops selling remaindered books: I grabbed my copy then. If you see it around, do the same.… (plus d'informations)
