What a wonderful exploration of the social justice history of the Bay Area! The "Guide" genre provides such a compelling way to profile the issues and challenges that are part of our region's past and present. I thought I knew a lot about the social history of my home, but learned so much more. The statements from local activists and leaders added a really great personal grounding and it was also nice to see the connections with other related important efforts like [b:Wherever There's a Fight, 10th Anniversary Edition: How Runaway Slaves, Suffragists, Immigrants, Strikers, and Poets Shaped Civil Liberties in California|45045695|Wherever There's a Fight, 10th Anniversary Edition How Runaway Slaves, Suffragists, Immigrants, Strikers, and Poets Shaped Civil Liberties in California|Elaine Elinson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1556359035l/45045695._SX50_.jpg|69747970] and [b:Hidden San Francisco: A Guide to Lost Landscapes, Unsung Heroes and Radical Histories|48856337|Hidden San Francisco A Guide to Lost Landscapes, Unsung Heroes and Radical Histories|Chris Carlsson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1577251477l/48856337._SY75_.jpg|74245468].… (plus d'informations)

A guidebook for locals. Interesting choices on what to include. I knew many places and learned about others, and thought about many others that I wish had been included.

I was dismayed to see a tiny health food store where I occasionally shop, including two very quick trips during the pandemic. I’m afraid it will now be found by more people post pandemic. It’s not a place I think tourists or even that many locals have historically shopped but now they might.

I loved the many maps. They are well marked with each place covered. I appreciated the photos although there weren’t enough of them. I’m glad that the Farallon Islands are included.

This is MUCH more than a guidebook.

Wonderful history and I learned a lot. It would make a fun guidebook but it’s really more of a history and current cultural book about the area. I would use this in conjunction with more traditional guide books if I was a visitor here.

I found much of it tedious to read and at times I was tempted to skim. This might be a book better appreciated if sections/individual places are read about only as the reader has interest or when about to be in their areas/see them.
