Chris Boot is an independent photography writer and editor of both books and exhibitions. In 1990 he joined Magnum Photos where he worked for eight years, eventually becoming Director of Magnum London in 1993, and subsequently Director of Magnum New York in 1996. In 1998 he joined Phaidon Press as Editorial Director of Photography. As well as writing and curating on photography, he is now an independent publisher/editor and his projects include Gideon Mendel, A Broken Landscape (2001), Here is New York - A Democracy of Photographs (2002), Our True Intent Is All For Your Delight - the John Hinde Butlin's Photographs (2002), Collecting Photography (2003), Lodz Ghetto Album (2004) and Things as They Are: Photojournalism in Context Since 1955 (2005).

This apparently coffee-table book is actually a reasonably erudite examination of the history of war photographers on all sides in World War II. The author starts with a detailed examination of the lives and careers of various photographers, including Cecil Beaton and Robert Capa. There then follow a small selection (by comparison with the total number of pictures taken) of photographs from all theatres of war. Particularly notable are some compositions by Beaton taken during the war in the North African desert which verge on the abstract; and examples of the work of Soviet war photographers, previously little known to us.… (plus d'informations)

Magnum is een fotoagentschap dat in 1947 is opgericht door Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodgers en David Seymour. Chris Boot heeft dit boek over Magnum samengesteld, hij schreef de inleiding en interviewde alle nog levende Magnum-fotografen.
"Magnum stories" biedt een overzicht van het werk van 61 Magnum-fotografen. Iedere fotograaf die besproken wordt heeft 8 blz: 2 blz met een interview met de fotograaf en 6 blz met een foto-essay. De foto's zijn meestal de moeite van het bekijken waard, maar wat dit boek echt bijzonder maakt zijn de begeleidende teksten waarin de fotografen praten over hoe ze tot de fotografie kwamen en wat hun werkwijze is. Zeer inspirerend voor iedere fotografie liefhebber!… (plus d'informations)

It's a marvellous book for people who are curious about the process and motivations of Magnum photographers ... I love it, and am inspired each time I open it.
