The virtue of this book is that Jonathan Bell takes the American election cycle as his unit of analysis to examine how the burgeoning Cold War came to undermine and destroy the possibility of a viable program of social democracy in the United States. The problem is that there are times when the author becomes too bogged down in the details of the assorted campaigns; a matter not helped by some fairly leaden prose. Also, it's not as though this story hasn't been told before; the difference being that Bell grants the supporters of American social democracy a better chance of success against the traditional anti-statist forces of American politics then they are generally granted. That Truman had to use the Cold War as a means to defend the gains of the New Deal suggests otherwise.… (plus d'informations)
