2021 movie #96. 2019. Just what you want from a Michael Bay movie. Lots of explosions, car chases, smart-assed dialogue and bullets flying. But no nuance, minimal plot (kill the bad guys) and no sense.

It's crazy enough to be entertaining, although ended up leaving a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

It's got a decent amount of funny moments (though much fewer than the first one), and some of the endless action is a little cool, but unfortunately there's little else here. The small but precious amount of grounding from the first film is completely gone, having devolved to a completely ridiculous non-stop-parade of car chases and gunfights, with supposedly good guy cops who for no apparent reason have little to no respect nor need for the law, and certainly none for human life. The plot is strung together with the same sense of willing suspense of disbelief as the action and character choices. In fairness to the film, a lot of these elements would be less of an issue if I came to the film expecting an over-the-top actionfest, but I was expecting along the lines of the first film -- exaggerated, yes, silly, absolutely, but at least with some core story you could care about at the core.

But if you can get with the new programme and enjoy the mindless fun, the film is reasonably entertaining, thanks largely to a good pacing (which it somehow has in spite of the very bloated running time and disappointing lack of plot) and of course the never-failing charm of Smith's quips and the ridiculous lines given to Pantoliano. Just don't expect a sequel that matches the tone and feel of the first -- except in the bickering relationship between the protagonists, which maybe feels a bit more forced here, but is otherwise exactly as before.½

The combination of a reasonably grounded (over the top action aside) action thriller and absolutely ridiculous identity confused farce surprised me, but it works tolerably well. The film shines whenever Smith and Lawrence get to bicker or jibber-jabber, but is unfortunately otherwise a bit rote. I found some quite memorable lines and character moments sprinkled throughout it made it worth my while, though.½

This sweeping drama, based on real historical events, follows American boyhood friends Rafe McCawley (Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett) as they enter World War II as pilots. Rafe is so eager to take part in the war that he departs to fight in Europe alongside England's Royal Air Force. On the home front, his girlfriend, Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale), finds comfort in the arms of Danny. The three of them reunite in Hawaii just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

I know it's a lot to ask of a Michael Bay movie, but I really wish anything in it made any sense. If just, like, one thing could make sense. That would be nice.

What the hell was that? I went in knowing it would be awful, but I wasn't ready for how upsetting it would be. It's offensively incompetent.

Sean Connery as a very crafty political prisoner who gets loose, and yet helps save the day, because he is treated humanely by another government guy. The Rock is Alcatraz, and a rogue military group plans to use a biological weapon. Suspenseful.

There are times I totally enjoy this film, and others where I cannot watch the violence, but I do enjoy the interplay between the characters played by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
