Julius Avery

Big budget piece of Nazisploitation grindhouse-style cinema that is made up of a slightly uncomfortable melange of World War Two men-on-a-mission war movie and bloody zombie horror. The plot is simple: it's D-Day and Operation Overlord is in full swing. A squad of American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to destroy a Nazi radio tower. With their transport shot down, the deleted squad regroups and makes it way to the tower where they find an underground laboratory where Nazi scientists are creating zombie super soldiers. The plot is pure '70s grindhouse welded onto modern computer-style action aesthetics so plenty CGI shooting and effects. Director Julius Avery makes some of this work well enough but the initial airborne scenes are an annoying extravaganza of plastic CGI. The characters are one-dimensional cyphers with only Jovan Adepoas as Boyce emerging with an real personality. On the upside there is plenty of blood and gore; the Nazi's are irredeemably evil and the battles between our heroes and the zombified super-soldiers are stupidly entertaining. Despite its many under-whelming elements there is enough ridiculous action and bloody carnage to make "Overlord" an enjoyable and above average action flick and a reasonable modernistic take on classic Nazisploitation.… (plus d'informations)
