Best book I have ever read on the Psalms. It came quite highly recommended and I had not read it until now for various reasons, but I am so very glad I did. Very sweet book.

'Understanding the Old Testament' neemt in de V.S. onder de theologische literatuur een zeer vooraanstaande plaats in. Het verscheen in de BBB in drie afzonderlijke, afgeronde delen. Deel I (Het Verbond) bestrijkt de periode waarin voor het eerst sprake is van het volk Israël (Exodus) tot en met de Richters. Geïllustreerd met 19 foto's.

Why was Miriam severely punished for challenging Moses' authority while Aaron got off scot-free? There is no way to avoid the fact that the story presupposes a patriarchal society

Historical criticism has yielded a view of Scripture that challenges the community of faith, both Jewish and Christian.

Is heterosexuality--the biological norm for reproduction--also the ethical norm for human sexual relations? My proposal does not provide answers, but gives a basis for discussion in terms of biblical theology

Bernhard Anderson provides a well written examination of the Hebrew Bible from a historical point of view. While this book does not delve deeply into many texts, it serves as a great overview that can point the reader in the right direction for further research. Anderson’s introduction to the Hebrew Bible as well as his good analysis of the text in its context is useful for those who are unfamiliar with the text and those who have studied the Hebrew Bible before.½

This is a very readable, yet intellectually respectable, introduction to the peoples and ideas of that collection of works we know as the Old Testament. Anderson makes no particular assumption as to the validity of the spiritual claims of its writers or readers so his work should be appreciated by a wide range of readers, believers, non-believers, and those lying somewhere in-between.

This is a textbook, so it's not exactly thrilling reading, but it's great if you're not familiar with the historical context of the Old Testament.

resents a study of the Old Testament by interweaving historical, archeological, literary, and religious perspectives. The book traces the story of the people of Israel from the Exodus in the time of Moses through the dawn of the Common Era. It considers the importance of literary criticism and other methods for understanding the literature of ancient Israel; treats the latest archaeological discoveries that illuminate the Old Testament period.
