Josef L. Altholz received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1960 and has taught at the University of Minnesota since 1959. His field is the history of the British Isles, chiefly religious, in modern times; he has taught Irish history since 1979

- In 1959, Dr. Altholz became an instructor of history at the University of Minnesota, moving up to the rank of professor in 1967. His specialty was 19th century English history. In addition to his teaching duties at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Altholz was the president of the American Catholic Historical Association (1986-1987) and founder of the Society for Victorian Periodicals conference. He retired from the University in May of 2003 and died on August 2, 2003.
