I really wanted to like Food of Love. It's received several positive reviews on Amazon and has an earnestness about it that's nice, but it just gave me a "meh" feeling. I never found myself caring much for any of the characters, though the book did have some funny moments. Maybe I'm just missing something here that I should have seen...

The structure Anne R Allen used for her novel Lady at Lakewood Diner was a good choice for working with two major themes: Coming of Age and Self Identity. The book begins with one point of view, that of Dobi, a woman who has stayed-true to small town Maine society’s rules of behavior. It is she who offers the larger narrative of Morgan who moved through three decades searching for her identity by rejecting society’s rules. The decades used in this novel are those many of us can identify with: a returned glance at the suppression of the fifty’s, counter-culture of the sixties, and the anti-war generation of the seventies. It is Morgan’s struggle with self-identity that creates Dobi’s ending move to challenge the rules she has always lived by. I found this novel interesting in structure to promote its themes,
This novel is right on with its literary and cultural insights. A pleasure to read.

What a surprising book this turned out to be! At first I thought I was going to be subjected to a book full of a sheltered spoiled brat... but NO! plot twist. And then I thought there would be a particular romance but NO! I was wrong. And I thought the protagonist was utterly helpless and hopeless but... you get the idea. Very fun to read, quite a page turner, but Warning: this isn't a mystery novel. There's no particular mystery other than how the heroine will manage to get control of her life.

Madcap comedies virually by definition are based on implausible and improbable scenarios. This novel goes well beyond implausible.
*Spoiler Alert*
Every multi-millionaire who ever had a drink with Doria's husband turn over 90% of their money to this Madoff type character. Doria, a successful business woman of 60, has been married to her 6th husband for just 3 years but has apparently turned over all financial decisions to him. Naturally everyone is broke and angry.

It is too far fetched to believe these people never used a professional. There is no dirth of lawyers and accountants in CA. Doria is TSTL and Camilla relies on money falling from the sky to solve her problems.

On the plus side, there were only 5 grammar and typo errors in the book.
