Maliha Abidi

This book provides inspiration and an important resource for anyone who could learn a thing or two about important women of color. Maliha Abidi introduces the contributions and short biographies of women from many parts of the globe, from different eras and representing a vast swath of fields. There are some familiar faces but also a lot of faces that are not commonly talked about. Though there is more attention being paid to unsung heroines these days through books, films and other media, Abidi writes and illustrates in a way that is inviting and encourages the reader to investigate further.… (plus d'informations)

It's a good thing that there are so many books now with women's biographies, as these stories are sorely needed. The flip side of that is that these often fall into a formula: a short profile of each subject, covering selected challenges and triumphs, along with a colorful illustration. For that reason, I found it easier to read this book a few pieces at a time, especially since the writing is just okay and in some places needs copyediting. I give this an extra half-star, though, for the sheer range of women included, with more from Africa and the Middle East than I have seen in other titles.… (plus d'informations)
