A biography, largely of John D. Rockefeller, Sr., the founder of the dynasty bearing his name; the book tangentially touches upon his son and some of his grandchildren. Rather pedestrian work, without a great deal of ground broken, and the author has a somewhat annoying habit of tossing in literary quotations and allusions. There are rather better books out there (such as the relatively recent biography of Nelson Rockefeller) on the family.

1297. The Parnell Tragedy, by Jules Abels (27 Oct 1974) The speed with which I read this book shows how absorbing I found it. It is footnoteless and not exceptionally well-organized, but the drama of the story caught me up, and I could hardly stop reading. Charles Stewart Parnell was born June 27, 1846, in Wicklow County (south of Dublin, on the east coast). He first ran for Parliament in 1874, lost, then was elected Apr 19, 1875. He met Kathleen O'Shea in July 1880. The O'Shea divorce trial was Nov. 15 and 16, 1890. Parnell died Oct 6, 1891. A fantastic life; I deplore the man's failings, but one cannot help but be impressed by some of his attributes. I have since read better accounts of Parnell (Charles Stewart Parnell, by F. S. L. Lyons, read 20 May 1979, and The Laurel and the Ivy: The Story of Charles Stewart Parnell and Irish Nationalism, by Robert Kee, read 1 May 1996), but the sheer drama of his tumultuous life made me, at year's end, award this book the award as Best Book Read in 1974.… (plus d'informations)
