Erotic Literature. Fiction. Romance. LGBTQIA+ (Fiction.) HTML:

Zach Mitchell is stuck in a rut. His college boyfriend left him ten years ago, but Zach still lives in the same apartment, drives the same car, and feeds his ex-boyfriend's ungrateful cat. His Denver business, A to Z Video Rental, is struggling. He has annoying customers, eccentric neighbors, and an unfulfilling romance with his landlord, Tom.

A combat boot-wearing punk with an attitude, Angelo Green was raised in foster homes and has been on his own since he was sixteen; he has never learned to trust or to love. He doesn't do relationships, so when Angelo takes a job at A to Z Video, he decides Zach is strictly off-limits.

Despite their differences, Zach and Angelo quickly become friends, and when Zach's break-up with Tom puts his business on the line, it's Angelo who comes up with a solution. Together with Jared and Matt, their friends from Coda, Colorado, Zach and Angelo will find a way to save A to Z, but will they be able to save each other too?

Reread for a challenge: Give a series a second chance. First time read November 2011.

Obviously I can either see more in the characters, or my tastes have changed slightly, because this is not a three star read for me anymore. Not really quite a 4 either, but I'll round up.

Zach still annoys me a little. How anybody can be so totally clueless in certain areas, yet not at all in others, is completely beyond me. I find it slightly unbelievable and that detracts from my enjoyment of the book.
Also I must admit, I'm not the greatest fan of first person narrative, so that doesn't help matters much. I did like the switching between characters. At least at times you could get an idea how the other party felt. But all in all it wasn't a bad read.

Now on to the next: the one I actually DNF'd last time round... ( )

What I liked about these characters is that they are so very imperfect. With Zach, he has such bad taste in men that I wanted to shake him, and with Angelo he has so many other issues with relationships and abandonment.

The only thing that bothered me a bit was a time where there was some unprotected sex early on in the book. Our heroes do not even consider the possible health risk, especially considered the situation.

Now, considering we are reading fiction, I don't really demand it to be real life, but I have gotten used to it in the m/m romances.

I was surprised when I found out how old these characters were. They felt more like people in their late teens/early twenties then late twenties/thirties. There was an immaturity about them both that lingered all the way through.

I enjoyed the chemistry between them, although Zach's sudden realisation and Tom's largely unexplained appearance in Coda felt like a plot device to shove the story along rather than a constructive part of the plot.

Nice writing and some really gorgeous emotional moments that had me weeping buckets. ( )

Set in her Coda universe, this book introduces Zach and Angelo, two men very different from each other. They build a tentative relationship through friendship and eventually Zach gets that Angelo likes him, likes him. It's a very different relationship than the one that Sexton developed in Promises. Angelo is very uncertain, has had a difficult start in his life. Zach is more the slacker type.

I must say these two characters didn't really hook me like the ones in Promises did. Your miles may vary. A very soft 3 stars. ( )
