A history of the world through the eyes of a historian, one who is brilliant, daring beautiful, vain, cruel, judgmental, and narcissistic. That woman, Claudia, is on her deathbed remembering a life fully (if not always well) lived. I don't really know what to say about it. It is about love of many stripes, duty, war, beauty, and maybe the divine or its absence and definitely about the meaningfulness and meaninglessness of language. It is funny and heartbreakingly sad, and the language (meaningful or meaningless as it may be) is just achingly beautiful. I read this based on the rhapsodic reviews of several trusted GR friends, and as I would expect they were 100% right. Thanks, Candi, Lisa, Robin, Julie, and the others who let me know I needed to read this. While this was only about 200 pages, it felt longer to me. The narrator, Claudia, is on her death bed, and tells us she will write a history of the world. It is mainly HER history, of a life (and love) with her brother, Gordon, throughout their teen years and then later. She is jealous of his wife. However, she meets a man who is the love of her life. The story goes back and forth, highlights times of war and peace, and is a reflection of her life and loves. This has received critical acclaim, but it wasn't for me. I enjoyed [Penelope Lively]]’s [Moon Tiger]. In the last decade I’ve been put off reading books about infirm and dying women going over their past lives. But I liked the sound of the MC Clara and the way Lively uses her memories to “document” Clara’s history of the world. I liked Clara’s unconventional ways and acerbic wit. The novel is in a way, a history of world though it ends in the late twentieth century. I can’t help wondering what Clara’s take would be of the twentieth century. Somewhat like mine I expect. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Winner of the Man Booker Prize Penelope Lively won Britain's prestigious Booker Prize for this deeply moving, elegantly structured novel. Elderly, uncompromising Claudia Hampton lies in a London hospital bed with memories of life fluttering through her fading consciousness. An author of popular history, Claudia proclaims she's carrying out her last project: a history of the world. This history turns out to be a mosaic of her life, her own story tangled with those of her brother, her lover and father of her daughter, and the center of her life, Tom, her one great love found and lost in war-torn Egypt. Always the independent woman, often with contentious relationships, Claudia's personal history is complex and fascinating. As people visit Claudia, they shake and twist the mosaic, changing speed, movement, and voice, to reveal themselves and Claudia's impact on their world.
