Fiction. Literature. HTML:

This was no ordinary war. This was a war to make the world safe for democracy. And if democracy was made safe, then nothing else mattered - not the millions of dead bodies, nor the thousands of ruined lives. This is no ordinary novel. This is a novel that never takes the easy way out: it is shocking, violent, terrifying, horrible, uncompromising, brutal, remorseless, and gruesome...but so is war.

Johnny Got His Gun holds a place as one of the classic antiwar novels. First published in 1939, Dalton Trumbos story of a young American soldier terribly maimed in World War I - he survives armless, legless, and faceless, but with his mind intact - was an immediate bestseller. This fiercely moving novel was a rallying point for many Americans who came of age during World War II, and it became perhaps the most popular novel of protest during the Vietnam era.

Great fluid writing style. Dark though less impressive on a reread. ( )

“Then how could a guy lose his arms and legs and ears and eyes and nose and mouth and still be alive?
How did you make any sense out of it?”

Pretty much sums up the theme of this book. A young man, flung into war, wakes up to the above situation and while reliving his life, struggles with the horror of his predicament. It's more like a horror novel than a war novel, considering the condition of the poor man.

I enjoyed this read but didn't love the ending. I felt like I needed more closure.
And I'll tell ya' what, on a personal note - I maybe shouldn't have read this just one week before I go in for back surgery. I'm not comparing that to what the young man in this book woke up too, but it would be a nightmare for me to wake up next week without the ability to move my arms and legs! So, if you are facing any kind of surgery, don't read this book until after!!! ( )

I first read this book about a decade ago and have since reread it several times. It is still one of my favorites and is such a well-written book with a powerful antiwar stance. The last chapter gives me chills every time I read through it and the whole book is a harrowing and eye-opening experience. ( )

Oh NO! My arms! I can't feel my arms! I used to have arms, but now I have NO arms!

And my legs! I can't feel my legs! I used to have legs, but now I have NO legs!

And my face! I can't feel my face! I used to have a face, but now I have NO face!

Oooohhh my life is so sad now! War has given me a fate worse than death and no means of escape! I used to have a lot of boring memories that I will endlessly write about with my non-hands, but now they are all dreams, and my life now is a NIGHTMARE! Oh my godddd. Whyyyyyyy. I am anti-war now. This could happen to anyone! Hark, my story, it is so sad, realistic, and relatabllllleeee.

"There can be no question of the effectiveness of this book." "Mr. Trumbo sets this story down almost without pause or punctuation and without a fury amounting eloquence."
