*choose colours you like, and don't fall prey to colours of the season (they'll change before you've pried the lids off the paint can)
*window coverings: before you get carried away with intricate pleats and embellishments ... remember that windows exist to let in fresh air and light; the coverings are to control those elements.
Many design books are published as if we're all interior decorators and have fantastic budgets. Mayhew's book was fun to page through and find snippets that applied for whatever one might be wanting suggestions. The language was simple and easy to understand. A plus in my world were the changes that one can reasonably attempt versus the renovations that really need to be contracted to a professional. ( )
