"The blend of romance and cozy mystery will please lovers of all things Scottish." â??Kirkus

'Tis the season to be jolly, but in Moosetookalook, Maine, Christmas cheer is in short supply due to a snowless winter that's keeping skiers and shoppers at a distance. Fortunately, Liss MacCrimmon of the Scottish Emporium has a plan . . .

Liss's brainstorm focuses on Tiny Teddies, the hot new toy of the season. Every store across the country is out of stockâ??except a few wee establishments in good ol' Moosetookalook.

The first sign of something amiss occurs when the last Tiny Teddy is summarily executed: shot through the heart in the display window of greedy toy store owner Gavin Thorne. But the Teddy's demise is just a precursor to the eerily similar murder of Gavin himself.

Now, with the Twelve (or, in Scots terms, the Daft) Days of Christmas rapidly approaching, Liss has a plate full of things worse than haggis to contend with, starting with a stockroom packed with poultry (don't ask), and ending with a killer who'd like to see Liss's goose well and fully cooked . . .

"A picturesque location, a bit of romance, some suspense, and a cast of appealingly quirky characters." â??Booklist

"Lively . . . A healthy helping of foul play." â??Publishers Weekly

"Perfect for the holiday season." â??Romantic

I really wanted to like this one. I'm a fan of all things Scottish, but this one didn't really hit the mark. Don't get me wrong it was okay (hence, the 3 stars) - I just wouldn't pick this one up again. Having said that I'm giving Liss 1 more chance. I hope it fares better. ( )

And here ends the 2011 Christmas books. I have to say I'm kind of relieved, as none of them were very good. Next year I'm opting for trashier novels, preferably with Highlander in the title :) ( )

A bit amateurish and a light read, but it held my interest and was a well laid out mystery. It did get to the point where I thought if I read "Moosetookalook Scottish Emporium" one more time, I would scream; the Scottish angle is very contrived. ( )

When Liss MacCrimmon discovers that tiny Moosetookalook, Maine, has the only supply in New England of the season's hottest Christmas item, she convinces the other business owners to participate in a festival that will draw shoppers to the town. When one of her fellow shop keepers is murdered, Liss ends up in the middle of the investigation.

Once I was able to overlook the improbability of the impromptu town festival, I enjoyed this Christmas cozy. I like Liss, and I enjoyed the references to other mystery writers and the tongue-in-cheek references to the kinds of situations cozy heroines like Liss find themselves in. This series is one of my favorite discoveries of the year, and I look forward to reading about more of Liss's adventures. ( )
