Michael Warner has been drifting in a numb haze since the death of his lover, who was killed by a drunk driver. As the anniversary of the wreck approaches, Michael's grief grows more suffocating. Yet he must find a way through the maze of pain and secrets to live for their troubled young daughter. Out of the darkness comes a voice, a lifeline he never expected to find--Rebecca O'Neill, a development executive in the studio where he works as an electrician. Rebecca, a former celebrity left scarred from a crazed fan's attack, has retreated from the limelight, certain no man can ever get past her disfigurement. The instant sparks between her and Michael come as a complete surprise--and so does her almost mystical bond with his daughter. For the first time, all three feel compelled to examine their scars in the light of love. But trust is hard to come by, especially when you're not sure what to believe when you look in the mirror. The scars? Or the truth?… (plus d'informations)

I think all my friends read this years ago but I held back because I don't like first person present tense. But I'm trying to get over that since so much is written in that (totally unnecessary) tense nowadays that I have to or miss out. For the most part it wasn't too jarring. So on to the actual story

I'm giving this one 3 stars as a romance because I felt like the major romance was between the hero and his dead lover rather than him and the heroine. The parts about him grieving were well written and I really enjoyed him as a bisexual character who just accepted love wherever he found it man or woman. I did enjoy the early parts where Michael and Rebecca were falling in love but somehow at the end I wasn't satisfied in a romantic sense because even in the epilogue Michael was still calling Alex his soul mate. It really made Rebecca seem like second best instead of an equal love which I felt she deserved. ( )

Definitely a unique contemporary romance. Watching the three main characters battle their personal demons was both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Not a light read, but a good one. ( )

Wow. Just wow. Did I say wow already? The best book I've read so far this year, without reservation.

Let me elaborate, because I think it's necessary. I don't usually read Contemporary Romance. It's just not my thing. They are formulaic and boring to me. This is not that book.

The characters are deep and damaged. The pain that haunts Michael leaps off the pages and wrenches the heart. Honestly, I've never read so much of a book with tears in my eyes. If there is any downside to this book, it's that if you are extremely sensitive it might be too much for you. I'm not kidding, it hurts that much. However, following along while they conquer the hurdles is a wonderful experience that is worth every moment of sniffling.

Deidre Knight writes characters unlike any I've met in a long while. An absolutely amazing book that gives you an emotional ride you won't soon forget. ( )

Wow. I could not put this book down, except to grab another kleenex. I truly appreciated the authors' realistic attention to struggles with grief, loss, the journey to healing, and the joy of falling in love again. Be prepared to become emotionally invested in this well written story. ( )
