"A lovely complementary novel... Austen would surely give her smile of approval."

â??Beverly Wong, author of PRIDE & PREJUDICE PRUDENCE

An unconventional newcomer brings the threat of scandal to Pemberley

Kate O'Hare is not a typical Victorian woman. Her intelligence, vivacity, and beauty captivate all those around her, including the young and handsome Darcy Gardiner. But she cares more about science than about dresses, and her unusual behavior makes her a fresh and interesting addition to the Pemberley estate.

Until her association with scientific controversies of the day and dark secrets from her past put her and all her newfound friends in harm's way. Will Kate's involvement in the public world, where many believe a woman doesn't belong, bring scandal to Pemberley? Or will her charm and wit be enough to banish the shadows of her past and hold on to Darcy Gardiner?

"Inventive plot lines, credible characters, and an engaging style. Add to this an enviable knowledge of the history and culture of the period and a sensitive appreciation of the values and traditions that underlie the novels of Jane Austen, and it is not difficult to understand the popularity of her work."

Postscript from Pemberley is the seventh book in the highly acclaimed Pemberley Chronicles Series which has followed the characters of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice through subsequent generations. It is now 1866 and readers are introduced to two romances: The first is between Julian Darcy (son of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett Darcy) and Jessica Courtney (daughter of James Courtney and Emily Gardiner Courtney); the second is between Darcy Gardiner (grandson of Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth Darcy) and Kathryn O'Hare, daughter of an Irish immigrant.
The leading characters in Postscript from Pemberley are intelligent, interesting and morally upstanding. The Victorian era is brought to life through a focus on issues of the day. Darcy Gardiner is politically active and desirous of reform, throwing his support behind Mr. Gladstone. Julian Gardiner is a scientist studying bacteria in Africa, and Kathryn and Jessica discuss the ideas of Mr. Darwin.
Nothing untoward happens to Julian in Africa and the slight scandal that attaches itself to Kathryn is easily brushed away. Other minor misadventures are also quickly and smoothly resolved. When problems arise, a character comes forth with a solution that is immediately and successfully implemented. There is little to anticipate and a decided lack of suspense in the story. Nevertheless, the characters are easy to like, and one can enjoy their happy lives. ( )
