A normal cricket fan, even a historically aware one, is not likely to be familiar with Geoffrey Howard. But he was one of the most important of English cricket administrators who also happened be around when interesting things happened. He was the manager when Len Hutton's team won the Ashes in Australia in 1954-55, next year in Pakistan where the English cricketers doused an umpire in ice cold water, secretary of Lancashire when Jim Laker took 19 wickets at Old Trafford and the secretary of Surrey when Basil D'Oliveira scored 158 at the Oval in 1968 which indirectly lead to the ban of South Africa from cricket.
The contents of interviews that Stephen Chalke did with Howard forms the spine of the book, with background and details added from numerous other sources and words of the other actors. An immensely enjoyable read. ( )
