Jenny and Mike Pitt, a wealthy marriage has just moved to Kensington, London. He is an ambitious and pragmatic businessman; she is a consultant for a prestigious design furniture store. They have two young daughters, Amy and Lucy, and lead a quiet, comfortable life. But soon their placid daily life is shaken when the Lucys nursery teacher thinks she sees in the behavior of the small signs of deep anxiety and discomfort. Mike must face, then, a terrible accusation and use the services of Steve Booth, a lawyer specializing in family law. Booth, used to deal with the poorest families in Brixton, always contemptuous of the rich, accepts, however, the case of Pitt. Was Jenny mistaken to believe in the innocence of her husband? Or should the social services act expeditiously to protect the little Lucy?… (plus d'informations)

appassionante

Hornby is an Italian woman practising family law in the UK and wrote this book to expose the problems of the children act in the UK. The book is about a father in a family who is accused of child abuse on thin evidence. The book is predominantly a thriller about whether or not there will be a finding in fact against the father for the abuse and if the children will be taken away . However it is also a very acute assessment of the sorts of class prejudices that impact both in favour of and against the comfortable cosy middle classes. The book also portrays the gritty but inspiring reality of really committed socially motivated lawyers in the unglamourous areas of family law and the parade of awful lives they are called on to engage with. I foudn it very moving and very well observed.
