I saw this book in a secondhand store and thought it looked vaguely interesting but didn't want to buy it that day. So I requested it from the library. They had to interloan it from Windsor. And once I actually got a chance to read the text, I deeply regretted not buying it (I checked, it was sold already). It is so much more than the decorative coffee table book with pretty photographs that I expected. The author spent years of summers living and travelling with Inuit friends and mentors. He gained a deep respect for and understanding of the Arctic landscape and the meaning of Inuksuit, which he conveys with feeling. It might be an armchair traveller's book, but the journey is spiritual as much as anything else. ( ) A compelling, engaging, and edifying book on inuksuit, the mysterious man made structures found all over Canada’s Arctic. The author became a companion to Inuit elders, who welcomed his constant questions, and led him to the locations of all types of inuksuit, described their history, and divulged their deeper meanings. It makes for compelling reading further enhanced by photos of inuksuit in their environment. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
The mysterious stone figures known as inuksuit can be found throughout the circumpolar world. Built from whatever stones are at hand, each one is unique. Inuksuit are among the oldest and most important objects placed by humans upon the vast Arctic landscape and have become a familiar symbol of the Inuit and their homeland. In author Norman Hallendy’s forty years of travels throughout the Arctic, he developed deep and lasting friendships with a number of Inuit elders. Through them, he learned that inuksuit are a nuanced, complex and vital form of communication. Hallendy’s dramatic color photos of many different kinds of inuksuit and objects of veneration capture not only a sense of wonder and power but reveal the unfamiliar Arctic landscape in all its magical beauty.
