From the back book flap: "One of the 20th Century's most controversial figures, Marcus Garvey became a champion of black rights as the charismatic leader of the Back to Africa movement, which sought to establish a central homeland for blacks.
"Born in Jamaica in 1887, Garvey was a self-taught orator with a magnetic personality. He used his talents to heighten black pride and introduce a program of educational and economic opportunity for blacks.
After moving to New York in 1916, Garvey became known as the 'Black Moses' in tribute to his popular efforts to realize his vision of a black homeland. Included in those efforts was the creation of the Black Star Line, a fleet of vessels that was poorly managed by Garvey (?) and ultimately led to his fall from power.
"Nevertheless, he would be recognized: 'All the freedom movements that are taking place right here in America today were initiated by the work and teachings of Marcus Garvey,' said Malcolm X."

Note on the use of the term "blacks" on the back flap of this 1988 book. Here is guidance from Columbia Univ.: "AT THE COLUMBIA JOURNALISM REVIEW, we capitalize Black, and not white, when referring to groups in racial, ethnic, or cultural terms. For many people, Black reflects a shared sense of identity and community. White carries a different set of meanings; capitalizing the word in this context risks following the lead of white supremacists."

Jamaican born Marcus Garvey, stout and dignified, represented the diaspora of Africans around the world with his famous speeches and relentless battle with those who felt threatened by his charisma and power. As a Black Nationalist Leader and founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, he stirred controversy and question among Blacks and Whites as he rallied for Blacks to move back to their roots for the red, gold, black, and green of Africa. This biography written with an introductory essay by Coretta Scott King, is part of the Black Americans of Achievement series for young adults. Full of primary sources, this 113 page book is excellent for historical knowledge and research for the English and Social Studies classroom. ( )
