The British Lawnmower Museum, Keith Harding's World of Mechanical Music, and Mad Jack's Sugar Loaf. In a world of theme parks, interactive exhibits, over-priced merchandise and queues, don't worry, these are names to stir the soul. Reassuring evidence that there's still somewhere to turn in search of the small, fascinating, unique and, dammit, British. In a stumbling journey across the country, in search of the best, we have to offer our intrepid heroes discovered dinosaurs in South London, a cold war castle in Essex, grown men pretending to be warships in Scarborough, unexplained tunnels under Liverpool and a terraced house in Bedford being kept warm for Jesus's return. And along the way, they met the people behind them all- enthusiasts, eccentrics and, you know, those who just sort of fell into looking after a vast collection of gnomes . . . This book makes you proud!… (plus d'informations)

An alternative tour of Britain from the people who brought you The Framley Examiner.

Forget theme parks. Forget the giants of the museum and gallery world. Get yourself out to some of the quirkier attractions the UK has to offer.

Apart from the ones that closed in the 17 years since this book was published.

I'd visited 9 of the 42 places in this book. I've got another four added to my list of places to go out of my way to visit, and some that I might visit if ever in their neck of the woods. ( )

I really liked the book it was not the best written tome I have ever read, however the reveiwers really made you want to go and see the simple and interesting places of interest. I still can't talk my partner into going to the pencil museum!!! ( )

An enjoyable read, that supports my own view that the modest and quirky places are often the best places to visit. The book whetted my appetite for the following destinations that I haven't yet visited:

* Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker

* Pitt Rivers Museum

* Williamson Tunnels

* Bletchley Park

* Edinburgh Vaults Tour not to be confused with The Real Mary King's Close

* Port Sunlight ( )

Bollocks to Alton Towers is a sort of alternative travel guide to places in UK. Most books of this sort direct you to the famous tourist spots (like the amusement park, Alton Towers, in the title), this quirky little book recommends day trips to all kinds of obscure places which also guarantee a dose of fun. Here's a pub built like a pack of cards in Devon, the David Beckham trail in North London, a village on Salisbury Plain abandoned during the war when the army wanted to test weapons, the Cumberland pencil museum ... and much much more. The pieces by Robin Halstead, Jason Hazely, Alex Morris and Joel Morris are amusing and informative and I'd love to follow up some of these unusual day-trips next time I go back to dear old Blighty. (I'm getting homesick!!) ( )

I now want to go to the Pitt-Rivers Museum very much indeed. Also to Dennis Severs' House. And the Williamson Tunnels.

A champion of the obscure, this book offers an alternative guide to British days out, shunning mass market attractions like the theme park of the title and instead plumping for the quirky, modest, and we’re told, quintessentially British option. "We want to go to the sort of places that might sound dreadful, dull, grim, cheap…" is not a good start from the authors, who admit they came up with the idea for the book while drunk. While the book does not set out to ridicule, there is some mockery. The Cumberland Pencil Museum entry includes the line: "Pencils don't just happen on their own you know", while at Gnome Magic in Essex we are told tales of gnome kidnapping, suicide and gender discrimination.

If it is true that the British are a nation of animal lovers, then our favourite animal is probably the underdog.
