4 out of 5 stars Historic synthesizer - artful and soulful interpretations of Debussy, January 10, 2006
Reviewer: Steve Stanley "contemplative" (Berkeley, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This album, like Switched On Bach by W. Carlos, is a pioneering synthesizer work.
I remember how amazing it sounded when it came out in 1974.
Listening to it now, I am impressed by the soulfulness of interpretation Tomita achieved with an unwieldy electronic instrument. (single-voice only, I believe; multitracked on analog tape! There's a photo of Tomita on the back cover that shows him surrounded by racks of electronic equipment.) Somehow, despite the slow, highly technical process of generating and recording this, he finds an expressive range from the ridiculous (Golliwog's Cakewalk) to the Sublime (Engulfed Cathedral).
Well worth a listen. ( )
