If you've read other Citro books (like Passing Strange), this will be right up your alley. Seventeen stories from all over New England regarding curses put on properties, families, etc. (most from the 1800's) and how some of these hexes may still be in the works today . . . cool stuff! ( ) Synopsis: A creepy and mysterious collection of historical accounts of curses that destroyed people, places, and objects around New England. The author researched and found a collection of tales from old Yankee folklore and brings them to life. At the same time, he let's the reader decide for himself whether to believe that things were simple bad luck or words uttered to cause harm. I recognized some of the tales from Maine - the curse of the Desert of Maine and the curse put on the Saco River. The author included tales from Native American lore, coastal ship wreck curses, and curses brought on by witches. The book was so engaging that I stayed up until 2 AM reading it - and then couldn't sleep because I was creeped out! Definitely recommended for those who enjoy supernatural tales and those familiar with New England. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
New Englanders are always cursing. But a colorful profanity uttered by some stero-typically taciturn old Yankee is usually more humorous than menacing. Yet, true maledictions (the opposite of benedictions) have frequently been spoken on New England soil, curses intended to invoke evil, injury, or total destruction against other people. Stories about preternatural revenge are numerous in Yankee lore, with each New England state providing its favorites. Some are well known, at least regionally. Others are nearly forgotten. Within these pages, storyteller Joseph A. Citro vividly brings these tales to life, letting us decide if these tales of woe were bad luck or ... something else. All are cursed Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
