Uneven, as many anthologies tend to be, but with an interesting way of looking at some of the philosophies that can underlie science fiction and speculative fiction. ( ) A 21st century take on Ellison's classic anthology "Dangerous Visions". The stories were good, although they don't all exemplify the screed of the editor. Political ideology, in general, is basically uncorrelated with literary workmanship. Nor is Kelleghan's position necessarily indisputable. Major case in point: despite her declaration that Kelly's 'Think Like a Dinosaur' represents a masterful improvement over and refutation of Campbell's 'The Cold Equations', both protagonists end up killing a girl. PS: this being the new modern liberated world and all, there is still only one female author in the book (in addition to the editor). PPS: My take on humanists in the aggregate: they see only the flaws in the "opposition" and only the virtues of themselves (not an unusual position for any faction). The events of Obama's campaign 2008 and early administration 2009 illustrate the width of the divide between extreme partisans of all stripes and the committed-but-reasonable people caught in the middle. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Science Fiction with a Bite! What if we were modified neurologically so we could only tell the truth? What if aliens beamed us proof that God didn't exist? What if the sideshow freak you're seeing is really a visiting alien? What if a teleportation accident created a duplicate you? Meet the Savage Humanists: the hottest science-fiction writers working today. They use SF's unique powers to comment on the human condition in mordantly funny, satiric stories, each accompanied by commentary by renowned SF scholar Fiona Kelleghan. Every author in this anthology has been nominated for the Hugo or Nebula Awards - or both! - and many have won. In these pages, you'll find the top names in the SF field including: Jonathan Lethem (author of the novel Gun, with Occasional Music), James Morrow (The Philosopher's Apprentice), Kim Stanley Robinson (Red Mars), Robert J. Sawyer (Rollback), Connie Willis (The Doomsday Book), plus Gregory Frost, James Patrick Kelly, John Kessel, and Tim Sullivan. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
