Kyra is the daughter of a famous actress and director, and her brother Kyle is also a famous actor. When the book opens, Kyra's husband has just been killed by an out-of-control taxi cab in NYC. In the weeks following his death, as she is grieving, a young girl shows up at Kyra's door claiming to be her daughter, even has a birth certificate with Kyra's name on it. Kyra is beyond shocked because she has never been pregnant and can't have children because of a birth defect. This girl also has a 3-year-old boy, Jesse, with her and demands that Kyra keep him because she no longer wants him because her boyfriend doesn't like kids. Kyra takes Jesse, and the girl leaves. Turns out, Jesse has been severly abused. Sounds like a great beginning, right? It was, and then it deteriorated rapidly from there. Too many subplots that didn't tie into the main story and were just unbelievable. When the 14-year-old Jesse's kidneys failed and Kyra allowed him to make the decision to die rather than have dialysis or a transplant, I gave up on the book.
