I really enjoyed reading about Beatrix Potter. When I was growing up, my grandma loved her stories and we used to read them together all of the time. Instead of the normal grandma names (granny, grandma, etc.), I called my grandma Mopsy. I didn't know anything about Potter's life before I read this biography, I was just familiar with her work. I learned so much about her life through this book. I had no clue that she wanted to be a scientist, I didn't know that once she became rich she bought land all over to turn into museums and keep the nature. I thought this book was very informative and also straight to the point. I really liked this book, and would definitely read this book to my class if the opportunity arose. ( )

This is a great book about Beatrix Potter and her life. I read this book to my students and they really enjoyed it because we are using one of her books that she wrote in the classroom, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. I enjoyed this biography as well because I am learning about these people that I never heard of before and Beatrix seems to bee a very important person in the writing world. ( )

This picture book is the biography of my favorite children’s author, Beatrix Potter, who was responsible for publishing the famous children’s book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Although Beatrix lived a lonely life in the countryside of London and sometimes Scotland, she created art and writing of things she found beautiful in nature as a coping mechanism. Beatrix came from a very wealthy yet emotionally detached family with just one younger brother five years her junior that kept her company. Together, they collected animals and plants in secret and would inspect, draw, and research their findings. Over the next couple of years, Beatrix would go through multiple spouts of depression, often due to feeling loneliness with no companions. When she felt this way, she would turn to her writings. On a particular occasion, she decided to write to an old friend’s son. She wasn’t quite sure what to write, so she made up a story about four rabbits playing in the forest reminiscent of her time spent in the countryside. This letter would soon turn in the famous, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Although Ms. Potter was known for her twenty-three tales, she spent a great deal of time studying mushrooms because she believed mushrooms could possibly be a cure for cancer. However, women in the late 1800s were not taken seriously, especially in the medical field. I was pleasantly surprised when I began reading this picture book. I had chosen this book based on the beautiful woodland theme illustrations. I had no idea that this book would be about my favorite childhood author. I was also surprised to know just how depressed she was. She spent most of her life in solitude, but she had such an exquisite imagination and brought a whimsical take on science. ( )

As a child Beatrix Potter was my sister and I's favorite books. So much so, that we actually had two rabbits named peter and cottontail. They were my sister and brother's rabbits, for I was young. The "Tales of Peter Rabbit" collection was something we owned, but unfortunately lost them all in Katrina. I did not know Beatrix Potter went through so much just to get her books published. I do share a common interest with her, which I should have known from all her books she wrote. She was very animal friendly and loved farming. This actually surprised me and I was smiling ear to ear to find out this information. ( )

She was the first child born. She didn't see her parents very often and didn't really play with other children because she was home-schooled. They would paint the animals that they brought into the house. When the animals died they saved the skeletons and drew the bones.

This book provided her birthday and place of birth. The book talked about what Beatrix and her brother did in their spare time. They would paint flowers and animals. The book talked about how she became so interested in art. She went to museums and was introduced to a famous painter. Beatrix Potter book talked about how she came up with the idea of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit." However, she was more interested in drawing and writing notes about science. This book actually talks about her love of science and how she thought that mushrooms could help with cancer research, but not one took her seriously because at the time women weren't really involved in science. She got married to Willian Heelis after she bought the Castle Cottage and they moved their together. This book ended with a nice quote. She was a modest famous author and illustrator. She really only cared about the children and what they got out of her books, not how popular or rich she was.

Both books talked about how she made greeting cards, but The Tale of Beatrix Potter stated that she made them to help raise money for children in the hospital. This book mentioned that she wasn't able to live on her own while drawing the greeting cards. Both books talked about how no publishers would produce her story on Peter Rabbit, so she published it herself. After it became popular, a publishing company wanted to publish it. Both books talk about how she fell in love with her editor, but he died before they could get married. She bought the farm, Hilltop Farm, but this book talked about how she had to live at her parent’s house because she was still unmarried. However, the other book, The Tale of Beatrix Potter, talked about how she bought it before she married Norman and when he died, she still went to live on the farm by herself. Both books talked about how she bought many houses that were used as museums. She did this to protect the animals living there. Both books talk about her winning prizes at the country fairs, but The Tale of Beatrix Potter, doesn’t mentioned that she stopped writing and painting right after she got married. The Tale of Beatrix Potter didn’t mention her eyesight at all, it just talked about how she couldn’t go outside and that she continued to paint inside until she died. ( )
