Those who rationalised the army in the second half of the 20th century by amalgamating regiments and changing their names under-estimated the emotional impact of their reorganisations, especially on Highland regiments, each with its own tartan, its own music, its own customs stemming from ancient battles. The Cameron Highlanders, known as "the 79th in line", were amalgamated first with their neighbouring rivals the Seaforths, and then both were amalgamated with the Gordons. To long-serving soldiers, some of whose fathers and grandfathers served in those regiments, these unions were forced conversions. The Regiment had been a way of life, and service to the Regiment a worthy life mission.
