Ray Holmes joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in 1936, and throughout World War II, flew many different aircraft. This autobiography examines his flying career, particularly in the Hurricane when he was the first fighter pilot to shoot down a German bomber over London in the Battle of Britain. This autobiography covers just a few short years from Ray's introduction to flying through the end of the war. Thankfully the author's biography allows the reader to confirm that he led an interesting and hopefully rewarding life after his demobilization.
The writing is honest, if a bit cryptic due to some cultural/professional language that I'm unfamiliar with. I doubt editing would improve it however - the author's voice is part of it's charm. The major areas Ray operated in include: pilot training, battle of Britain, overseas training of Russian pilots, and photo reconnaissance flying. These probably make up a little more than half the book, the rest is occupied with smaller stories and events. ( )
