Just one of the Guys by Kristan Higgins is a 2008 HQN publication. Chastity O’Neill grew up the only girl in her large family- then Trevor came along and was for all intents and purposes, adopted into the O'Neill clan. Trevor’s own family was torn apart by tragedy, but the O’Neill family embraced him as one of their own. But, for Chastity- her feelings towards Trevor aren’t brotherly- she’s in love with him, and try though she might, she can’t help but compare other men to him… and so far, no guy has been able to measure up. The problem is, Trevor’s feelings towards Chas, are firmly planted in the ‘sisterly’, ‘best friend’, ‘just one of the guys’ categories… This is one of Higgins’ older titles- published back in 2008. This book was buried deep in my TBR list, and I was surprised to find it there. I was positive I’d already read this book, but with no rating or review and listed as ‘want to read’, apparently, I hadn’t. According to my new rules, if a book has been on the list longer than five years, it gets deleted, or read immediately. Well, there’s no way I’m scratching a KH book off my list, no matter how long it’s been there. But- If I’m ever going to make headway with this monster list, I needed to read it right away… So here we are… This novel is over a decade old, and it shows, with some dated phrases and attitudes- with Chas’s willingness to poke fun of her body image being one of them. Okay, she is funny- laugh out loud funny- but sometimes, I thought she was too hard on herself. The premise of the story is emotional, and I loved the various challenges the characters faced, and am a firm believer in the moral of this story. The tension between Chas and Trevor is palpable, for a while- but things went on a bit too long, and I found myself more interested in another thread. When the big moment finally came it was literally at the last moment, and though the gesture is huge, it seemed to come out of nowhere, and was super rushed. I admit, I never really warmed up to Trevor, for some reason, but I wanted Chas to be with the great love of her life, so I was happy, if she was. The epilogue was perfect, though, and I closed the book feeling good about how it all turned out. Admittedly, this was not my favorite KH novel, but I still enjoyed it, overall, and I’m glad I finally took the time to read it! 3 stars It was clear where this book was going from the beginning (if I wanted suspense, I'd read mysteries!), but I sure enjoyed the way Kristan Higgins got me (and her characters) there! A sweet story with convincing, likable characters, and--most refreshing--hilariously funny in parts, Just One of the Guys was really pretty good. I got it on my Nook for free on one of Barnes & Noble's Free Fridays [it was recommended by Rachel Gibson, another author I like], but now that I know that Higgins knows her way around a good story, I'd definitely buy one of her books when I want a little romance novel treat! Out of all of her novels, "Just One of the Guys" by Kristan Higgins is by far one of her best!! This great romantic comedy, just made it so I couldn't put it down. Especially with lines like, "I'm being killed by my appetizer.", you just can't go wrong. I think most women at one time or another feel like 'just one of the guys', which is a good thing but not when your in love with one of those guy friends. Which is what happens to Chastity. After moving back to her hometown, the books opens with her getting dumped and not in the most pleasant way either (even though it's never really pleasant). Getting back into the swing of things again, hanging out with her 4 older brothers with their co-worker buddies and such has it's benefits. However, she really would like to find her special someone. In doing so she can't help but still have her crush on one of her best guy friends, named Trevor, whom she has known since she was 10 yrs old and has practically been raised as another brother around her. Then there's a new handsome doctor in town that has caught her eye. And what would she do just to not be seen as just one of the guys .... This book is one of my faves for Kristan Higgins, my other fave of hers is "Too Good To Be True". Review By: From Me to You ... Let me start with Chastity. She had some issues. She was kind of crazy, but I grew to like her enough. I guess I can say I got used to her. I was confused about Trevor and his motivations since the book was told strictly from Chastity's POV. But he seemed like a decent enough guy. The situation with Chastity's parents was just insane, though, I didn't get that one at all.
All in all, this one was entertaining. I didn't love it, and it took me awhile to get past the beginning. But it all turned out okay in the end. ( )
