This children’s picture book touches on a serious issue. Niki Daly writes about how a young boy and young girl deal with their father’s alcoholism. This is the first children’s pictures book that I have read that has revolved around such a mature problem. Even though alcoholism is not a typical topic to be discussed with young children, Niki Daly does a great job with keeping the book respectable and worthwhile. This book is definitely a good one, and could possibly be relatable for some students. ( )

The story inside those pages was not the one I was expecting to get at all, but I say that in a good way. This story is about someone's dad. Maybe the author's or maybe someone she knows. The story is about a family and father who is slowly becoming an alcoholic. It was truly a story that I couldn't put down. It isn't too often you come across a children's book that is not teaching you a simple lesson like minding your table manners, but teaches you the reality that some kids have to face at a young age. A parent or parents who have an overriding factor in their life that takes a tole on the whole family in a negative way. Sometimes young kids have to take the brunt of those factors, but its up to the teachers to have those kids backs. A very deep and impactful book that happens to have a very happy ending. ( )

A dad is an alcoholic and his children are witnessing it. Every Friday night he gets drunk and gives away some of their belongings. They see their parents fighting over the bottle making them sad. They have a talent show that they do not want their dad to know about because they know he will be drunk. He finds out, embarrasses them and now they hate him. Eventually he goes to AA meetings and they plan to support him through the process.

I really enjoyed this book. Daly dedicated this book to his dad so I'm assuming his dad was an alcoholic, also. This shows how alcoholism can affect the children especially when the connection is close. Children are so forgiving and were willing to support their dad through the meetings. Excellent book! ( )
