From the start I liked Bruce Birch’s Let Justice Role Down. He gives solid reasons for why this book is important for both theology and ethics. He honestly examines the Old Testament and practically applies the theoretical insights from narrative theology (seen in Frei, McClendon, and Hauerwas) to the Old Testament. I thought it was great. For me personally, it was an opportunity to hear afresh the worldview of the Bible (specifically the OT) and in a sense to rebuild broken aspects of my faith. (

Birch's book is competent, thorough, well researched--the best study currently available on the subject. Written clearly and helpfully, it will appeal to clergy and laity in the church and should also find use in the classroom. Christian ethicists will especially want to take note of its discussions about the Old Testament as a moral resource.

This volume is a wonderful, readable introduction to ethics and the Bible that should remain valuable for years, for the author concerns himself with the OT as a "moral resource" rather than with moral issues per se.
