This book is good for young readers. It's about a family moving to America, and the dad faces challenges finding a job due to documentation issues. The story highlights the struggles families may encounter and emphasizes the importance of sticking together and supporting one another. ( )

I would use this for primary/young intermediate. This book is about a family moving to america and the dad having a hard time finding a job because of documentation. I would use this book as an importance of family and love.

I really liked this book and how it captured the exciting experiences that kids and adults go through when the move to a new country. I think especially for young children the journey of moving to a new country is exciting in a lot of ways because they are not yet aware of the harsh realities of racism so I think this is a good book to help children see the good things about moving away from home and all the exciting new things you get to experience. "When This World Was New", is told in the point of view of the main character and son, Danilito, whose family immigrated from one country to another with his family. Danilito was nervous to start in a new school with the fear of not knowing enough English. Danilito 's Papa was also starting new work as a factory worker in order to earn a a living for his family and to pay for Danilito 's Mama's medicine. There are great stopping points in this book for students to make observations and predictions on what they think could happen next, as well as where the family moved to and from. Uncle Berto makes it evident to readers that in America, "los americanos" were generally kind people but not towards foreigners. Danilito also points out how not many people in the airport spoke English, which was a shocking thing to him. There are some Spanish translations in the book that are great for early Spanish learners. The illustrations in this book are also great depictions of what is occurring throughout the story. This story has a sweet ending where Danilito is not as scared to attend a new school as he was before, when he looked out into the field where him and his Papa's footprints were planted in the snow, that represented love, adventure, and steps towards a new beginning for Danilito and his family. I enjoyed this book and would find it to be beneficial in a lesson about being a new kid at school, as well as a lesson on immigration and moving to a new place. This can lead to great discussion amongst young students. ( )

A young boy named Danilo and his family move to America where no one speaks their language and is one of the busiest cities. He doesn't seem to like anything around him and they struggled to make ends meet. Going to school was scary for him since no one spoke the same language as him. Just as everything seemed to not be going as well, his father gets a job and everything seems to go up from there. Once his home environment changed, he seemed to change also and then he wasn't so scared to go to school anymore.

This book could come in handy when a student who doesn't speak English well or speak well at all to make them feel welcome and help those who may feel out of place. ( )
