My favorite of the Sunfire series...I devoured these books as a kid. ( ) Emily is a book about a girl who lives in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Her family is rich and her parents want her to do everything she can to ensure that she is in high staus in the city. However, Emily does not believe in that. She grew up with her parents always gone on trips and it never changed as she got older. No it is worse because she has two siblings who are going through the same things she did. After her parents leave for a trip to Paris, her brother gets extremely sick and she is forced to get a doctor from the hospital downtown but the family doctor is out of town. Emily has to get the doctor's assisstant to care for her brother. While the assisstant is caring for her brother, Emily finds that she is interested in being a nurse. She decides to sign up as a volunteer nurse at the local hospital, which is the same hospital that the assisstant works at. When her parents get home, its not as easy to keep the job. She is forced to quit the nursing. The assisstant has fallen in love with her and he convinces her parents to let her do what she loves. Her parents agree and then Emily ends up marrying the assisstant. I lile the way the book is written. It's as if Emily's mind is switching back and forth between two decisions. Even though she kind of disobeyed her parents, i like the way she stood up for what she wanted. In the beginning of her volunteering it was a liitle emabarrassing for her but then she learned not to care about other people thought og her. I think thats how a lot of peple should be instead af always worrying about what people think. My "youth romances" growing up were Janette Okes and other things you could find in the local Logos Bookstore. I can't lie, I really enjoyed them even though they were not Grate Literchur. If I had been allowed to read secular youth romances, these would have been right up my alley. Historical fiction with nice predictable plots and generally tame but warm-hearted Life Lessons. These seem to be like comfort food, not high-quality comfort food, more like those mashed potatoes that come in a box. I mean, I am getting that all from this one book, but since this is the eleventh in the Sunfire series, I'm pretty sure it's got the standard formula down. Emily is a snotty turn-of-the-(20th)-century brat who decides she is bored with her life and she wants to DO SOMETHING, so she does. Her parents do not approve, of course. While rebelling, she falls in love with a boy who is totally Wrong For Her. (Of course.) For the rest of the book, she is at war with her parents and her HORRIBLY UNHELPFUL EMOTIONS. There's also a fake love triangle thrown in there, and an irredeemable cousin whom I wanted to smack probably a dozen times. Oh, also, the cover art SUCKS and reminds me of those little figures that come with cheap Christmas Village sets. Needless to say, I will be seeking out more Sunfires. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
