Svarene er å finne i Martas dagboknotater. Det mest fatale Otto har gjort mot sin hustru er å pålegge henne å gi opp sin post som lærerinne. Deretter betrakter han alle hennes meninger som sjarmerende innfall det ikke er bryet verdt å legge vekt på. Hun blir hans pryd av en hustru, og parallellene til Ibsens Nora er nokså nærliggende. Marta vil noe mer med livet sitt, og da Ottos kompanjong, Henrik, kaster sine øyne på henne og blir oppriktig forelsket i henne, er Marta et lett "bytte". Så blir Otto alvorlig syk, og Marta tæres nesten i stykker av skam- og skyldfølelse. Dessuten begynner det å gå opp for henne at Henrik kanskje bare en repetisjon av Otto. Hva gjør hun når det kommer til stykket? Jeg fascineres av gamle klassikere som beskriver kvinnenes rolle i deres samtid, og er alltid sjeleglad for at utviklingen har gått videre. Because of its topic, I would recommend this book to other women. I think that they may best appreciate the emotion that the author brings out in Marta. It is not filled with action or adventure, and in fact it lacks much plot development other than the reflections of Marta. For certain though, it is a brief read and a window into the psyche of this guilt-ridden woman in the early years of the 20th century.
