What Athletes Are Made Of by Hanoch Piven, is a non-fiction collection of short stories about famous athletes. Basketball, Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Boxing, and NASCAR racing are some of the sports covered by the book. Some of the athletes discussed are Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Venus and Serena Williams, and Joe Namath. After reading this book I noticed it had many qualities that make it an outstanding book for children. The first thing you notice about the book is it's abstract pictures. Featuring a mix of drawn pictures and photographs, these pictures will attract children right away. Each short story tells the truth about specific athletes and are written to engage the reader.

I would use this book in my classroom with any students who were interested about sports or a famous athlete featured in the book. Each story gives only a small amount of information that could led children to asking more questions and eventually turn into a project. Students can use this book as a starting point to learn about famous athletes, then look to other books or resources that can deepen their knowledge. ( )

A really "cool" book about athletes and what they stand for and interesting facts. On each athletes face little things that can describe the athlete and what they are interested in. A great book for sports minded kids. ( )
