In an elementary setting this book provides great fodder for a conversation about belief and myth. The details of how each aspect of the world known to the Plains Indians came to be are a beautiful illustration of how myths can explain the unknown. Goble's colorful and stylized illustrations highlight this creation story.

This book describes how the earth and its beings were created through the stories of the Great Plains of North America. The book is well illustrated and brought the story to life. This book could be a good book for younger readers whom are studying Native Americans.

As a reader, this book did not appeal to me. I have studied different Native American tribes and know of their tales; however I did not enjoy this particular depiction. This may because of my upbringing and the creation story that I am used to. If I were to reread it in a nonjudgmental way I believe that I would enjoy it more.

As a teacher, this book would be good to use in a social studies unit on the Native Americans of the Great Plains. Students could compare and contrast the creation story of the Great Plains Indians and those of other tribes (if that is allowed in schools). ( )
