George, Jean Craighead The Grizzly Bear with the Golden Ears. Illust. by Tom Catania. Harper & Row, 1982. 32p. Middle elementary and above
Golden Ears is a three year old Grizzly bear with a little cub living in the forests of Katmai and fishing for salmon in the Brook’s River. She bluffed the other bears and got their salmon so she didn’t have to catch her own but when she ran into trouble with Ursus, a 1,000 lb. male, she decided to change her ways. This informative, moving story is told in the third person narrative view and has a survival theme. Story is accompanied by realistic pen and ink drawings.
AK: Grizzly bears, salmon, Katmai
Activity: Have students find the areas mentioned in the book on a map of Alaska. Ask them if they have ever seen a grizzly bear and if so, where and when? Ask if they know the difference between a grizzly bear and a brown bear. Lead them to information on the differences if they do not. ( )
