Vile Bodies is a dry, humourous story of young love during the flapper era. Lively dialogue and constantly changing scenes keep the reader going. He loves her, but she can't commit, but they enjoy the high life of parties and clubs. It does end on an ironic and low note. It reminded me a bit of the screwball comedies of the 1930s and 1940s.
Black Mischief finds Englishman Basil Seal on the African island of Azania assisting the English-educated Emperor Seth modernize his country. Emperor Seth is obsessed with all things European and is constantly having Basil institute the new changes. Other characters come into play and highlight the corruption that is rampant in the country. Again it is with a humourous, tongue-in-cheek view.
Neither stories were quick reads for me, even tho I have read Waugh before. But I am glad I've read them and know I will read more of the author's work.
