This is the first mystery in which we meet Mark Twain and his secretary, Wentworth Cabot. Twin is embarking on a speaking tour down the Mississippi with travel by steamboat. But, before leaving, there is a murder in New York. It is obvious that this has to do with Twain and his book, Life on the Mississippi, in which he describes buried treasure. So the two men are on a riverboat among several characters, one of whom has committed murder. It takes Twain and his friends from his riverboat days to solve the crime.
