WOW. This book is so crusades. JFC. It was definitely a good but stressful read. I liked all the characters and the magic is cool. I'm still not sure if I even know what's really going on; what's really the point of the book. But it's interesting none the less. I'm also really confused about the main characters and their significance and it's quite strange that we've only had a semi glimpse of it after 600 pages.

I don't regret reading it though. I suppose my feelings about the overall story will develop as I move on to the next book. I wanted to give it 3 stars because things happened, but I felt like the story didn't go much of anywhere, which is nice because there's lots left, but I'm scared it'll be like this until the last 100 pages and I'll have to throw a fit. But it was interesting enough in its writing that it gets the extra star. ( )

This starts off quite slowly but it builds into a very interesting story of a group of people in a world something like ours where magic is a reality and is set in something that resembles the Middle East during a period not unlike the crusades.

Marron is a young man who is trying to come to terms with the terrible things he has done in the name of his religion and trying to find a way to make a role for himself in the brotherhood, the Society of Ransom. As a lowly soldier he has done things he would rather forget.

Julianne is the daughter of the King's Shadow, in the Roq de Rancon, en route to her marriage. Along the way she was joined by Elessi, a woman who has some secrets. Joined by others they have to face up to legend and strangeness and try to come out the other side alive.

There were times when it felt like a quest novel where the author was trying to get the various people in a role-playing group together but in the end it turned very interesting and the characters became quite likeable. I look forward to the sequels. ( )

Plot: For a book this size, there isn't much of a plot, but it's not something that's really missed. What plots exist are fairly straightforward and without too many twists and surprises, serving as a background and foundation to hold the individual scenes. What's tricky is the ending, which dumps a few unforeseen things on you and makes you scramble to accept a few 180 degree turns. It's quite unsatisfying and feels like the last 50 pages belong to a different story altogether.

Characters: Nicely done. Some are likable, some are interesting, some are annoying like nails on a blackboard. Character development is what drives the story along, and it's handled well in almost all cases. A notable problem is the romantic/sexual entanglement between two characters, which comes with far too little build-up and simply isn't convincing at all. It feels like it caters to a stereotype and nothing more.

Style: The prose is elegant, to a point (especially in the early chapters) where it gets annoying because it trades beauty for readability. Scenes are composed well; dialogue feels good and realistic. Violence is handled in a very casual way, which is a lot more fitting than if it had been dramatized.

Plus: Good alternate universe approach of the Crusader States. Interesting characters.

Minus: The plot is a weak point because it doesn't exist. Developments in the last section of the book do not fit the overall story at all and are jarringly un-explained and handled in a very unemotional way.

Summary: A good read for the genre, but not a must-read by any means. ( )

Die Ordensburg Roq de Rançon ist die äußerste Festung im heiligen Land gegen die Ketzer und den großen Feind, der es geschafft hat, sich und seine verteufelte Magie vom Rest der Welt abzuschotten. Marron ist ein einfacher Mann und dem Orden beigetreten, um für Gottes Wort zu kämpfen, doch sein Moralempfinden und die oft unmenschlich grausamen Regeln der Brüder vertragen sich nur schwer. Er findet Unterstützung in einem edlen Ritter mit dunkler Vergangenheit, der fest im Glauben und dennoch ausgestoßen unter seinesgleichen ist, denn ein schweres Verbrechen und der Gestank von Sünde haften ihm an. Die Burg beherbergt auch eine junge Dame, die auf ihren Bräutigam wartet, den sie aus politischen Gründen heiraten soll. Von anderer Stelle bekommt sie jedoch gefährlichere Pflichten auferlegt, denen sie nachkommen muss, und dafür braucht sie Hilfe. Die findet sie in ihrer mysteriösen Begleiterin, einem Gefangenen, einem Jongleur und ausgerechnet in Marron, der zwischen alle Fronten gerät.

Persönliche Meinung:
Die Zeit der Kreuzzüge, komplett mit Templern, anderen Rittern, Ordenskriegern, Homoerotik, der Rolle der Kirche, dem nahen Osten und dem Konflikt zwischen Glauben und Menschlichkeit. Das ist ein Templerroman, wie ich ihn immer lesen wollte, nur kommt er im Fantasy-Mantel daher. Wie nennt man das Genre? Historisch angehauchte Fantasy? Ein Blinder mit Krückstock erkennt, worauf das aufbaut, und dennoch spielt die Geschichte nicht in unserer Welt sondern einer frei erfundenen. Zwischendurch sorgten einige Längen für gelegentliche Durchhänger, aber ansonsten konnte ich von Marron und Sieur Anton nicht genug kriegen. Deswegen habe ich manchmal auch etwas sträflich rasch über die Sequenzen mit den beiden Frauen hinweg gelesen, obwohl selbst die einen sehr schönen Subtext hatten und mir als Charaktere gefallen haben.
Die Magie wird genauso wenig erklärt wie die Religion, die scheinbar auch magische Elemente beinhaltet. Trotzdem wirkt das Buch nicht wie andere Romane, in denen Fantasy eine Rolle spielt, sondern eher wie ein historischer Roman.
Ein Wort zur Warnung: Wer die Geschichte im Original lesen möchte, sollte sich an die britische Version halten. In der US-Version ist das Buch in zwei Teile geteilt, was man leicht übersieht, da der zweite Teil der US-Ausgabe genauso aussieht und genauso heißt wie die UK-Komplettfassung. Also Vorsicht!

Liebe und Triebe:
Der m/m-Anteil ist nicht zu leugnen. Oft nur angedeutet und zwischen den Zeilen, aber nicht als Subtext sondern definitiv Text, manchmal auch explizit. Das hat Niveau. ( )
