Matters of succession lead to attempted murder in the latest of Greeley's popular mysteries. Archbishop Malachi Nolan has designs on the Diocese of Chicago despite the fact the Most Reverend Blackwood Ryan, himself recently appointed an archbishop, is currently in line for the post. Assigned to keep watch on his rival, Blackie travels to the Nolan family estate in Grand Banks, where he soon finds himself immersed in an entirely different dynastic struggle. Spike Nolan, founder of Aviation Electronics, isn't even dead yet, but his children, grandchildren, and their respective spouses are already feuding over who will inherit control of the multimillion-dollar company. The only family member who doesn't have a stake in the quarrel is the clerical Malachi . . . so why is he the one targeted by an unknown killer? To get to the bottom of the mystery, Blackie will have to sort through the tangled family dynamics of this highly dysfunctional clan, as well as figure how out his fellow archbishop was nearly stung to death by hornets inside a locked room!… (plus d'informations)

Catholic bishop Blackie Ryan and amateur detective faces a couple of issues in this novel. A minor one it turns out is Archbishop Malachi Nolan's lobbying to be made the new Cardinal of Chicago. When Nolan's niece attempts to kill him with wasps, her action throws the entire Nolan family into a tizzy. Most of them accuse talented Margaret Anne Nolan of having placed the can of wasps in the Bishop's room.

Margaret's grandfather, S.P.I.K.E Nolan is the Chairman of the Board of AVEL, a family run avionics company. Many of the Nolan clan feel he is too old to be in charge and are plotting his removal. They badly underestimate his knowledge of what they are doing and when a second murder plan is discovered, Blackie finally sees the pattern and steps in with the solution.

This is my second Blackie Nolan novel and I found this one much more entertaining then the first one I read. Recommended. ( )

Not bad. I don't expect much from Greeley--no more than I expect from most contemporary mystery novels. This one surpassed my expectations while also delivering the required (for me, at this time) escape from "heavy" writing!

Although the ending (almost always the problem) was a bit facile with a complete turn-about for one of the characters I still enjoyed it. Greeley did a bit of sermonizing, but that did not bother me. I always enjoy trying to put a pin (as it were) on the place where I think my sister and nephew-in-law would throw the book across the room. The first one that stood out for me this time was when someone nearly died in an accident, but said (roughly), "I just took communion, so I knew I'd go straight to heaven." Of course, to be fair, they would not throw the book anywhere since they would never pick it up in the first place!!

A fun read, and I would recommend it. ( )

Haven't read a mystery in quite some time. This was recommended by my wife who reads all of Andrew Greeleys books. Book is a quick read and Blackie is a bit of a character. Worth taking out. ( )
