"A major new voice in horror fiction . . . an electric style and no shortage of nerve."â??Booklist
At a club in Missing Mile, N.C., the children of the night gather, dressed in black, look for acceptance. Among them are Ghost, who sees what others do not; Ann, longing for love; and Jason, whose real name is Nothing, newly awakened to an ancient, deathless truth about his father, and himself.
Others are coming to Missing Mile tonight. Three beautiful, hip vagabondsâ??Molochai, Twig, and the seductive Zillah, whose eyes are as green as limesâ??are on their own lost journey, slaking their ancient thirst for blood, looking for supple young flesh.
They find it in Nothing and Ann, leading them on a mad, illicit road trip south to New Orleans. Over miles of dark highway, Ghost pursues, his powers guiding him on a journey to reach his destiny, to save Ann from her new companions, to save Nothing from himself. . . .

Skimmed after about the 50% mark. Written with beautiful prose (if not a bit self-indulgent), and I thought the vampire lore had originality. I also appreciate how unapologetically gay the characters are, and the openness about gender expression for a book released 31 years ago — especially compared to its contemporaries by Anne Rice.

Despite that, this book is full of VERY triggering, nasty moments and very dated commentary on sexual assault. I know — it's a horror novel, but a lot of the grossest moments feel like they're there because... they can be? Like, do we need that much detail when Jessy's father r@pes her? What am I gaining from that even IF it's a horror novel? With horror like this I ask myself what I'm gaining by reading: it doesn't have to be a deep message but at least enjoyment or entertainment, and I didn't feel like I was getting any of that out of this. This is very deeply grungy '90s horror, which despite the lavishly (lovingly, one might say) described . . . everything - horror, blood, injury, drugs (so, so many drugs), abuse, rape, nightmares, murder, and so on - within its pages . . . nothing of that feels terribly present. At least for me, most of it was at most disturbing of the cringe and blegh stripe if anything, not the kind of horror that makes an impression or lingers.

I've seen a number of people say they might have liked this book if they'd read it as a teenager, or similar; someone else commented that 30 is too old to start reading Poppy Brite. I'm in my 30s and I can fairly confidently say that I wouldn't have enjoyed this as a teenager either . . . and the heavy content might have been enough to screw with my head more than it did reading it now. I started out with promise, but quickly fell apart. There are some good things in between, but after reading all the way through, the end is rather disappointing. ( )

Son los hijos de la noche. Visten de negro, van a la deriva sin ningún ancla y buscan amor, ser aceptados y dar sentido a sus vidas...

A hardcore [b:Twilight|41865|Twilight (Twilight, #1)|Stephenie Meyer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1361039443l/41865._SY75_.jpg|3212258]. Would appeal to the dark eyeliner 13-year old, but I don’t appreciate YA lit. of any ilk. Brite, er I mean, Martin loses no opportunity in having her/his/their characters stop what they’re doing and drop the plot to get it on with anything alive or dead. If anyone thinks this is a fine depiction of gay or hetero sex, well you must be thinkin’ rape and incest are the bees knees. ( )
