What is overlanding? Wikipedia states, "Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. Typically, it is accomplished with mechanized off-road-capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping. It often lasts for extended periods of time (months to years) and spans international boundaries." Overlanding did not originate in America, and it is a little different here. You would be hard-pressed to find a bicycle out in the desert, and most people don't go overlanding for quite that long. However, the spirit of the activity is the same. Do you want to give overlanding a try? Great! You will need some gear. In The Overlanding Vehicle Builder's Guide, veteran racer, off-roader, and journalist Don Alexander provides a terrific overview of what to consider when building your overlanding rig. This includes the planned duration of the trip, the number of people in your party, how far off the beaten path you want to go, and the creature comforts you require. Understanding those wants and needs shapes what gear you need for the best experience. Covered are the strengths and weaknesses of the types of vehicles themselves, modifications to the vehicles to make them more capable, accessories (lighting, camping gear, food and water storage, etc.), and equipment for trail mishaps and recovery. Driving techniques and trail rules and etiquette are also included. If you are ready to build a rig or just want to know more about the hobby, this book is a great guide to help you get started.… (plus d'informations)

Where have you been all my life?! This slim volume is jam packed with useful information. It's technical while being accessible. Covering a wide array of topics, from how to poop in the woods to what to do when your vehicle takes a poop in the woods, the information and photographs presented here are everything I would look for in a "how to go an adventure" book, with some added stuff that I didn't even know that I didn't know. This book is now a part of our adventure load out. ( )

As someone with an interest in overland camping, I was excited to receive this book through LT Early Reviewers. If you are new to the concept, it can be relatively daunting. This book lays out the core concepts, basic necessities and more advanced ideas, and includes a variety of product recommendations and ratings. Overall, this is a good introduction and makes for a decent little coffee table book too!

Loved it! As a girl getting into overlanding, it’s kind of difficult to know where to start. This guide offers a lot of info in one place to get me started. ( )

As a complete novice, this book presents an extensive, clearly written, explanation of everything one would want to know about "overlanding," beginning with its definition. Charts, tables, photographs along with details on types of vehicles (their makes and models and the pros and cons), safety tips, and rules for the road are compacted into this one volume.

Beginning with Chapter Three, the book delves into minute details for the mechanic and the more experienced car aficionado. Finally, the ending chapters cover the possibilities that no one wants to consider, but are needed: emergencies and concerns on tires, batteries, tents, and accompanying gear for all terrains. Layout and design are outstanding so even a beginner feels able to follow along. ( )
