It's been a long time since I read Fangirl, although I remember really enjoying it (even though I skipped every single Simon Snow fanfic part) and I think this really does the story justice, maybe even makes it a little more fun! Also Levi is drawn so freakin' adorably - he's giving me Lee Pace vibes and I'm here for it. ( )

I was a little worried at first about how the story would transition into manga form but it turned out wonderfully. The art was SO good! I can't wait for the next volume. ( )

This was good. I wasn't a huge fan of Levi in this one, but i'm not sure if that was excerpt choice or my own mood. I'll definitely be reading the next one though! ( )

I read the novel Fangirl and loved it. It think Rainbow Rowell is a fantastic writer and know students benefit from seeing such well-written stories. I read this graphic novel due to a parent complaint concerning it.

This graphic novel follows the novel very well, incorporating the major ideas and conflicts. Cath writes fan fiction, which I didn't understand until I read the novel. She's very famous for her fanfic of a successful fantasy series, much like Harry Potter. As you read the novel, you get chapters from her fanfic writing. With the graphic novel, you get shorter snippets. Cath creates the main character as gay and attracted to his roommate, who is the "bad guy." You can't help but like both of the boys and get drawn into their predicament (more so in the novel than the graphic novel). Cath's twin sister attends college in order to be free--party, essentially, while Cath wants to hone her writing skills. Cath lucks out with a great roommate and her best friend who is a boy. Cath also meets a boy in her advanced writing class. She's slowly making friends and working toward a life she wants to have--as a writer. Her sister is rather dismissive of her and chooses partiers with whom to associate. The reader can definitely see what one gains by choosing academics or partying. Cath also worries about their father, who has his own issues. Cath's sister leaves all responsibilities behind, but Cath can't drop their dad. She sees some signs that he's slipping, but he still seems to be doing okay. The graphic novel ends before the actual novel does, meaning there are volumes needed to get the entire, original story told.

Overall, the graphic novel is decent. I love the novel much more, but I didn't have issues with the graphic novel. There weren't any red flags; there are a few cuss words. Coincidentally, while reading a section with a cuss word, a middle school kid yelled the exact same word down the hallway and repeated himself about twenty seconds later. Therefore, the cuss words were words that students hear frequently. Hearing or reading them will not make them use the word. They'll use it based on home life and/or the friends they hang around. The story will not appeal to 6th graders; it's definitely a book for more advanced and older readers as the characters are freshmen in high school. ( )

I generally enjoy graphic adaptations of books I’ve read in their original form, and this was no exception. I ‘m not a big manga reader so the manga style of the illustrations took a little getting used to, but pretty soon I settled in, and let the familiar story surround me. Cath and Wren are twins who have just started college, leaving their single dad behind. Wren is outgoing and adventurous and embraces college life. Cath is shy and shrinks from everything huge and new, retreating into the fanfic world where she is known and loved. Inevitably Cath finds a few friends and colleagues, and settles into some routines. This volume breaks just after Cath receives a shock after handing in her first big fiction writing assignment, and just as some big family shit is about to hit the fan. I forgot, or didn’t know, that this manga will be released in multiple parts. I may stick around for more, or I may have gotten enough from this. I guess time will tell. ( )
